Strokes

Globally 15 million people suffer a stroke annually! Some people who survive a stroke will recover fully but many people will be left with lasting disabilities. Strokes not only affect the survivor’s ability to live a normal life, but can also have devastating consequences for their loved ones.
 
A stroke, also known as a brain attack, occurs when the blood flow to a portion of the brain is interrupted, either through a blockage or a burst blood vessel. Brain cells begin to die if they are not given enough oxygen or nutrients, and this process may be permanent. A stroke may result in permanent brain damage, chronic disability, or even fatality.
 
While people over 65 are at a higher risk of having a stroke, but a person of any age can actually have a stroke, including teenagers, children, newborns and even unborn babies. Although estimates vary, stroke affects about 6 in 100 000 children.
